Collective Spirit is not just beautiful to look at but fascinating and functional as well. In total the boat contains over 1,200 donations. Each piece tells a story is a living archive of people’s stories and lives. Together they create Collective Spirit AKA “The Boat Project”.
Whilst much admired as a piece of art the intention was also to create a wonderful, long lasting legacy providing opportunities for people to experience her on the water.
Delighted to be the new custodians of “Collective Spirit” we aim to get her back out on the water and continue her legacy.
We now need your support to generate sufficient funds to cover her running costs and general up keep in the years to come.
You can support the next stage of her journey by becoming a “Friend of Collective Spirit”. Pick the package option that suits you best and get involved both on and off the water as much or as little as you like.
In return for your financial support you will get the opportunity to come sailing and experience “Collective Spirit” on the water. The greater your support the greater the opportunities to get afloat.
If sailing is not your thing but you still wish to get involved then we plan to organise a number of social events throughout the year and invite anyone that wishes to help out with her general up keep and maintenance to get involved on a more hands on level.
All funds raised will go back directly into the project on a “not for profit basis” so that she remains available for everyone involved to enjoy her for many years to come.
Any excess funds will be used for worthwhile causes and to get other people afloat that would otherwise not get the opportunity.
By bringing together those that were part of the project at the beginning as well as new people that may not have heard about the “Collective Spirit” story before this is a great opportunity to really do some great things with this project that was started over 10 years ago.
Ideal as a gift or if you wish to just bring someone else along with you then you can just pay for a space.
If sailing is not your thing and appreciate her more as a piece of art then you can still be part of her journey.
Our Sailing package gives you 4 vouchers to use throughout the year as well as join in with all the shoreside activities.
We can bring together one of our 40 ft Sailing Yachts as well as a RIB to take larger groups out on the water.
As custodians of “Collective Spirit”, Universal Yachting are best placed to manage her maintenance and secure her future. An established marine business based on the River Hamble we have access to a wide range of resources and she can run alongside our day to day business activities.
We will keep her afloat in Mercury Yacht Harbour on the River Hamble between April and September so that she is accessible and with easy access to the sheltered waters of the Solent.
There will be more news and announcements to follow about how we are going to achieve this so please do like and follow our Face Book and Instagram page as well register on this site to stay up to date with the latest news and be a part of the next chapter of her life.
This amazing sailing work of art has been dubbed ‘the ship of a thousand memories’.
Commissioned as part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad, it was the brainchild of Lone Twin performing artists Gregg Whelan and Gary Winters.
Called “The Boat Project” it set out to build a seaworthy boat entirely from wooden objects donated by the public.
A request went out for people to donate any wooden object, the only stipulation being that each piece of wood had to have a story behind it.
Donors gave their wooden objects for the project from the highly personal to pieces of national importance. They include fragments from over 50 houses, hockey sticks, wooden spoons and toys. Even a shaving from one of Jimi Hendrix’s guitars and a piece of the Cutty Sark.
The story behind each piece was documented and became part of the fabric of the boat.
